They broke out in 1999 for their best known single "Cailin", which appeared in the movie Coyote Ugly. "Seein' Red" followed in 2002 (appearing on Elva), and the single "Save Me" was released in December 2004, appearing on their album Here's to the Mourning. Coming out of San Diego, California, Unwritten Law has a power punk sound all of its own. The band features two guitar players, including Scott Russo, their chief songwriter and lead vocalist. Unwritten Law has stated that they play most of their songs acoustically before recording in the studio. This unorthodox approach towards punk music is perhaps one of their most unusual attributes. The group grew up in the same rock scene that produced longtime friends Blink 182 (the song "JOSIE" off of Blink's "Dude Ranch" album includes the lyrics "And my girlfriend likes U.L...").
